Art UK is organising and compiling a database containing all the public artworks in the United Kingdom. One of the areas where professional photographers can help, is recording existing public sculptures. Mike has become actively involved with this enterprise and the first few records he has taken are shown on this page, with a small amount of detail about the sculptures. This first sculpture is a fascinating clock in Casnewydd, called "The Nick of Time". When initially constructed by Andy Plant in 1992 for Newport's contribution to the Ebbw Vale Garden Festival the structure would open, on the hour, to reveal a bizarre world of skeletons, devils, cuckoos and angels hidden inside. |
"The Mighty Acorn" is a classic example of why the record needs to be made. A couple of pictures taken when the sculpture was new, about ten years ago, show that the cup of the acorn has disintegrated. Dai Edwards worked on this sculpture at Treefest 2010.

This lovely sculpture of three dogs running is at the Stihl Walkway entrance to Silk Wood. A favourite with children!

Another favourite of children is this "Knock on Wood" chain saw sculpture by Dave Lucas with many hidden hollows so that tunes can be played by knocking on different parts of the sculpture.
|
| Dave Lucas and David Lewis both supply work through the Woodland Centre Ltd who were commissioned by Forestry England to supply wood sculptures of the Gruffalo and his friends. In many of their parks they have Gruffalo Trails for the children and theirparents to follow. | |
