| The capital city and largest settlement on Ellan Vannin, Douglas is a fascinating place. It was a small town
until it grew rapidly as a result of links with the English port of Liverpool in the 18th Century, resulting in
a staged transfer of the High Courts, the Lieutenant Governor's residence and finally the seat of the legislature
Tynwald, to Douglas from the ancient capital, Castletown. The promenade in particular is interesting
as the terminal of the Manx Electric Railway is situated on the northern side of the bay, and a horse-drawn tram operates
along the promenade. At the other end of the promenade is the wonderful Gaiety Theatre, built in 1899 to the
designs of architect Frank Matcham, and beautifully preserved today.
