The Falkirk Wheel is an amazing feat of engineering and truly unique. The only one in the whole world!
It's 35m high, 27m long and was built in 2002. It weighs 1,200 tonnes, plus 2 x 50 tonne gondolas. Each gondola transfers a total of 250 tonnes of boats and water the 25m vertical distance between the Union and Forth & Clyde Canals.
Boat journeys through the Wheel take 15 minutes overall, but the gondolas complete their half turn between the two canal heights in just 5 minutes. It only takes 45 kW ( 15 electric kettles) of electric power to rotate it.

The people of Falkirk are incredibly proud of The Kelpies (shape-changing mythical beings) who live in Helix Park. Created by Andy Scott, probably the best way of describing this magnificent statue is by quoting his own words,
"I see The Kelpies as a personification of local and national equine history, of the lost industries of Scotland. I also envisage them as a symbol of modern Scotland - proud and majestic, of the people and the land...
They stand testament to the acheivements of the past, a tribute to artisanship and engineering and a proud declaration of intent for the future." Standing at 30 metres tall and made from 928 unique stainless steel plates bolted to a structural steel framework, they certainly inspire and affect all who see them.
